Staff and students from the Faculty of Health Sciences joined other members of the University of Nairobi (UoN) on the 2nd April, 2026 in the annual tree planting exercise at the Faculty of Agriculture, Upper Kabete campus.
The event saw approximately 250 trees planted reaffirming the university’s commitment to upholding sustainability and environmental conservation.
“We are going to be globally competitive but we're also going to transform and sustain our community,’’ VC Margaret Hutchinson stated in her address at the event.
The exercise aligns with the government's plan to plant 15 billion trees by 2032, aiming to boost Kenya's forest cover.
“We are going to push back the effects of climate change, we are going to push back its degradation and we are going to restore the environment. We have a commitment which we are stipulated to plant 15 billion trees by the year 2032,’’ the VC added reaffirming the university’s commitment to sustaining and restoring the environment.
Prof. Moses Nyangito the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to environmental and financial sustainability by highlighting the university’s agricultural plan in supporting this by planting an avocado orchid.
“Moving in a direction where we will contribute to the financial sustainability of the university, we have started an avocado orchid, already we have planted 3000 trees, our intention is to make that orchid have 10,000 trees,’’ he said in his address.
Collaborative partners thanked the university for their efforts towards a green country with the representative from Nacosti stating that their environmental footprint has increased since partnering with the institution in tree planting and agricultural projects.
“We have planted 19,000 seedlings within our partnership with UoN. Since we started our partnership in 2024, we have witnessed tremendous change in our growth-rate recording an 80% increase,” said Cyprian Karimi who represented Nacosti at the event.
In his remarks, Mr. Bimal Kantaria, the Managing Director of Elgon Kenya Ltd, committed to donating 500 avocado trees to support the avocado orchid.
The event saw a large turnout of staff and students from different faculties at UoN, members of UoN Senate, sponsors and partners including; Safaricom, Nacosti, Kenya Forest Service, Elgon Kenya Ltd, National Research Fund and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) all coming together to make their marks in environmental sustainability.
