Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth and KMPDC CEO and Registrar Dr. David Kariuki flunked by KMPDC inspection committee members and FHS medical students.

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) hosted a delegation from Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) on 7th April 2026 for an inspection of the Schools Medicine and Dentistry training facilities and their suitability to offer medical training at the University of Nairobi, Kenyatta National Hospital (UoN-KNH) campus.

The session was kicked off with a presentation by FHS Dean, Prof. Daniel Ojuka who presented the East Africa Community (EAC) checklist for the school of medicine highlighting key areas including; organization structure, student affairs, academic structure, performance, legislation, autonomy, finance and infrastructure.

Prof. Ojuka underscored the need for the importance of the Public Service Commission to hasten their processes and look into their Human Resource tools to increase the number of staff to address the faculty’s major challenge of disproportional student to staff ratio.

Dr. Benard Mua who represented the School of Dentistry reiterated the dean’s remarks while maintaining that there were adequate facilities to facilitate training at the dental department but lack of trainers.

A targeted physical inspection of the training facilities at the faculty and at the KNH Teaching hospital was carried out to asses the state of teaching sites and amenities that facilitated learning.

The inspection of the faculty’s facilities was led by the head of delegation for the inspection Prof. Ogendo who was led around the campus to asses the state of various facilities including teaching labs, the library, lecture theatres and faculty offices.

The meeting also gave students and lecturers an opportunity to air their views pertaining to the challenges they face and matters affecting their scholarly and working environments.

The inspection exercise culminated in a debriefing session where members of the inspection committee led by Prof. Ogendo presented an exit report highlighting key areas for consideration based on the presentation and inspection summaries and student and staff commentaries before the anticipated EAC inspection later in the year.

In attendance was Dr. Patrick Amoth, the Director General for Health, KMPDC CEO and Registrar Dr. David Kariuki, members of the KMPDC inspection delegation, members from Commission for University Education (CUE), faculty members and students.
